Comments: Safe Kids Day is an annual event to raise awareness on the protection of children from preventable injuries, the number 1 killer of children in the United States. Annually, in the spring, Safe Kids coalitions from around the world work to promote Safe Kids Day and motivate families to join us in protecting kids. Safe Kids Day, led by Alameda County Emergency Medical Services Agency, brings together 40+ public agencies and non-profits throughout Alameda County in a free, safe, and fun environment for children and families to receive education and resources. The event includes free distribution and fitting of bicycle helmets, a bicycle rodeo and the Bike Mobile bike repair station, dental screenings, health assessments, and a car seat checkup event. According to our statistics, 100% of families that attend car seat checkup events where they receive education and installation assistance, state they can correctly reinstall their car seat on their own. This is a great improvement over the National 95% car seat misuse rate. The event is entirely free for the public to attend and to all of our participating agencies who host booths and activities. The only thing we sell (for free) is health and safety to all.

This year’s Safe Kids Day falls on Star Wars Day: May 4. We want children to get just as excited about health and safety as they do seeing Stormtroopers and other members of the 501st Legion. Unintentional injuries – such as those caused by burns, drowning, falls, poisoning and motor vehicle collisions – are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in the U.S. Each year, among those 0 to 19 years of age, more than 12,000 people die from unintentional injuries and more than 9.2 million are treated in emergency departments from nonfatal injuries. (CDC).

I completed the 2017 Arthritis Bike Ride in Marin, CA and there were Stormtroopers at the finish line. In spite of being physically exhausted and weak from the bike ride, I immediately perked up and got super excited to pose next to a Stormtrooper. It was the coolest thing. I had never known about appearances before then.
